They dismantled the barricades
in the night. Rushing to work, late from oversleep and feeling fat
and vulnerable in all my clothes,
I saw them

dark blue, hundreds
like insects with shaven skulls

there have been whispers
police brutality
protection money
triads, gangs and men in black
from Beijing

all I see, in the coolness of
this morning is the
purposeful, secretive and quiet
gagging of the revolution

and we will sigh
but not set alight new fires
our time has slipped
through fingers still holding
yellow umbrellas, but
the world has turned away.
