Mid October

Mid October is
hazy, lazy blue skies. Schoolchildren
shrug out of
their hard brown sensible shoes
for flip-flops and 4pm warmth between their toes. Gone is
Summer’s heaviness, now is
the flush, peachy and contented
after – or before
the fall

still warm enough that milk
would spoil if left
in the playground, stickily neglected for skipping ropes and playmates
and sitting
with a full face of gentle sun
on the slatted benches, tiny toes swinging
for recess snacks

they are mine
they are my children,
in their plaid and white and pure
trusting smiles

I rarely talk about my work,
but in this mid-October afternoon I am so full of
warmth that every starfish hand
or small mouth singing in recognition is
a curving
arc of light to the serene and
golden heart of me.
