Watching the Star Ferry/Pilgrimage

I come here to watch my future
peel away

in a seven-minute pilgrimage
the Star Ferry splits the sun
like a bucking green fish

I haven’t seen a photograph yet that
gives my Tsim Sha Tsui story
a mouth. White girl sat in

holiday crowds
making promises against
the heat that floods the sky

repeating the prayer I’ve practised
to the China Gods and higher minds
that made this place:

It saves my life.
I hold each crossing of the
Star Ferry tight like a talisman

spot my names, our Gods;
Samsung, Sony. Bank of China – each
rod punching into the clouds

holds dark against my throat
an Affirmation: you need to see this

again, you need to stay
here and trace the bay and the wake
of the Star Ferry, again. You

aren’t done with Being yet
my Gods said

so I sat
and waited until the signs

stretched into golden tendons
full dark, and my city shone
like a religion.
