The Building

There is a building
set apart from all the others crowding caging heaven
twice daily we pass
a fleeting look and i’m twisting around in my seat
til he slides out of view
head and shoulders above the others
they fawn in its shadow as though they dreamt of being
just as solid

in the tiresome, eyebagged
grey and drooping mornings
the building seen from my bus seat is
uncompromising
he stretches as though those brittle bones
of iron and stone
could shoulder several thousand burdens
or rather
throw them off

It’s a building that stands alone,
bat-like
and irresistable
I couldn’t tear my eyes from his slender
frame
brooding against someone else’s black
and malignant sky
or stop imagining my broken body
lying
under his.
